Ataraxy Farm was started in 2013 as a therapy farm to help my husband with his PTSD from his military service in Bosnia. For 8 years we kept this little farm a secret to help my husband, except to friends and family. In 2021, we finally decided to share our little farm with the public. Since opening to the public, our farm has grown to help many others. Many now come to the farm seeking animal therapy with our horses, donkeys, mule, goats, and chickens. When we chose the name for our farm it had to have meaning. Ataraxy means a “state of serene calmness”; and it makes people that visit the farm feel just that, calm.
We are a dairy goat farm. We milk our goats by hand daily and produce skin care and hair care products from the milk. The sales from our products go 100% back into the farm caring for our animals. The sales also allow us to keep offering our farm tours for FREE.
Many are struggling with mental health issues. It is our goal to never charge for our tours.
Since starting in 2013, we have grown the farm from 2 horses to 6 horses, 3 donkeys, 1 mule, and over 60 goats. The initial purpose of our farm was for therapy, and it still is; however, after having to leave my career to care for my husband, I wanted to make sure our farm could keep operating in order to help others. Because we had dairy goats, I thought why not make soap. I did plenty of research into which oils would have the highest benefits for all areas of the body, including hair. And VOILA!
We built our farm for everyone. Our friendly animals are here for everyone to enjoy. Our visitors have included many injured veterans, clients of the Dartmouth Adult Services Centre, IWK Health Centre, Nova Scotia Health Authority, and members of the Eastern Shore Mental Health Association. If you would like to visit our farm, please select the TOUR tab and select your date and time for a farm tour. We limit the number of tours per weekend as our animals can become overwhelmed with too many visitors.
